Rockhounding at Skaneateles Lake – March 2025

Last weekend while hiking, the SO and I found a rock beach on Skaneateles Lake, one of the Finger Lakes in Central New York.

Check out what we found:

It was a windy day and the waves of Skaneateles Lake came crashing into the shore.

This is unakite – a metamorphic rock containing green epidote, pink feldspar, and grey quartz.

There’s a fossilized bivalve mollusk encased in this rock.

You can see the shape of the tiny bivalve mollusk fossil in this rock.

    One of my friends here in California is from Skaneateles. (I am from Syracuse.) I met him a couple of years ago. He is president of the local development team for the Golden State Warriors basketball team. We joke to our friends that we are the only two people in California who can spell Skaneateles.
