I recently visited Pettus Hill Preserve in Windsor, NY with the SO recently.
It was a typical September afternoon in New York- fairly warm, overcast, and the autumn foliage show has begun.
It’s a beautiful 105-acre preserve, created with the intention that it stay “forever wild”. 1.8 miles of trails that lead you through the woods to a vernal pool, an old stone foundation, and the Pettus memorial.

“The Pettus Hill Preserve was bequeathed to the Waterman Conservation Education Center in the Will of Charles Pettus, a retired IBM physicist and engineer. The property is to be kept “forever wild”, for the education and the enjoyment of the community.
Around 1990, Mr. Pettus attempted to make his property “the highest point in Broome County” by constructing the “pyramid” of soil and stone to the right of this sign. Although his efforts fell short, the Pettus Pyramid remains as a monument to his generosity, and Charles Pettus rests in peace at the base of this structure.”

If you’re looking for more info on Mr. Pettus, Bill Bitner gathered a bunch of old print media on his website: Wander & Ponder with Bill & Friends – Chuck Pettus Archives
