As the weather grows colder, the amount of hiking time I get shrinks to a fraction of what it is in the warmest months, and with the move to a new home, our priorities have kept us off the trails since the Letchworth glamping trip.
And during the pandemic [when I was 45lbs heavier], I made an oath to myself that I would get into [relatively] excellent shape [considering my chronic health conditions] and never allow myself to stray from loving my body ever again. I need to be healthy, nourished, and strong as I age. I can’t go back on all of that now! I worked HARD for this.
So I ordered a pair of 5 lb each (max) adjustable ankle weights from Amazon to help keep up my general leg strength, as well as stepping up my hips/butt strength training. (I was previously using a single 3 lb ring weight for the latter.)
And let me tell you, I’M FEELING IT! I’m so glad I took it easy the first few times. 5 lbs is a drastic change!
And then when I take them off, I do a few simple exercises for arm strength before putting them away.

Benefits of using ankle weights [according to Google]:
Ankle weights can provide several benefits when used appropriately:
Increased Strength and Muscle Activation:
- Ankle weights add resistance to leg and hip exercises, forcing muscles to work harder and build strength.
- This can improve muscle activation in the calves, quads, hamstrings, glutes, and hip flexors.
Improved Balance and Stability:
- Wearing ankle weights can challenge your balance and coordination, making you more aware of your body’s movements.
- This can help improve overall balance and stability, especially in activities like walking, running, and dancing.
Enhanced Cardiovascular Health:
- The increased resistance from ankle weights can elevate your heart rate and calorie burn during exercises.
- This can contribute to improved cardiovascular health and endurance.
Rehabilitation and Recovery:
- Ankle weights can be used in rehabilitation exercises after injuries or surgeries to strengthen weakened muscles and improve range of motion.
Versatility:
- Ankle weights can be used with a wide variety of exercises, including walking, running, squats, lunges, leg raises, and more.
- This versatility allows them to be incorporated into different fitness routines and goals.
Additional Benefits:
- Ankle weights can help tone and sculpt lower body muscles.
- They can also improve gait and posture by engaging core muscles.
Note: It’s important to use ankle weights safely and gradually increase the weight as tolerated. Consult a healthcare professional before using ankle weights if you have any underlying medical conditions or injuries.

When to Be Cautious:
- Avoid high-impact cardio: Do not wear ankle weights for activities like running or jumping, as this can increase the risk of injury to your tendons and ligaments.
- Listen to your body: Wear ankle weights for a limited time and start with a lighter weight to avoid strain.
- Focus on strength and toning exercises: Ankle weights are best used for controlled strength-based movements rather than high-intensity cardio.
If you’re looking for home workout equipment, definitely consider adding ankle weights to your collection. 100% recommend.
